Ingredipedia–Herb of the Day “Sage”

I thought I would start of with one of my favourite herb – the one herb that seems to be popping up constantly in the face products my skin seems to love.

Sage

Also known as Salvia officinalis

Salvia_officinalis_-_Köhler–s_Medizinal-Pflanzen-126

What’s in the name
The name ‘salvia’ and ‘sage’ are derived from the Latin salvere (to save).

Description
The plant usually grows to about a foot or more in height. The leaves are normally in pairs, oblong shaped, rounded at the ends, and finely wrinkled by markings of veins on both sides. It is very softly hairy. It is greyish-green in colour. They blossom in August. All of the parts are strongly scented.

Where it is found
Naturally found in Spain.

Parts used
Commonly the leaf or the whole herb

Uses
Essential oil in cosmetics or aromatherapy
Spices in cooking – savoury, slightly peppery flavour, commonly the leaves are used.
Directly chewed or as tea – for treatments of disorders (eg. gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, mouth and skin)
Really good as herbal tea.

Contains
Its active principle is a yellow or greenish-yellow volatile oil with a penetrating odour. It is high in Vitamin K. It contains volatile oils (essential oil), flavonoids (aka Vitamin P, antioxidant effects) and phenolic acids (including rosmarinic acid). Rosmarinic acid can be readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, and once inside the body it acts to reduce inflammation.

Properties
It is a natural healer. It cleanses the skin, soothes and cleans impurities from the blood. It is also used as antisweating (antiperspirant) agent, antibiotic, antifungal, astringent, antispasmodic, estrogenic, hypoglycemic, and tonic. Not only it is all that, it is an anti-inflammatory and good source of antioxidant as well. Talk about a super herb!
